About usProfessor Friedrich Spener made his career in lipid biochemistry and biotechnology at the

University of Münster where he was Professor of Biochemistry until his retirement there in 2004. Then he was asked to join the University of Graz to develop the Lipidomics Research Center (LRC) as a joint platform for the strong lipid community in Graz. The LRC was officially founded in 2006, the legal entity for the current project being the University of Graz. Prof. Spener is particularly engaged in cellular transport of fatty acids, signalling and gene regulation by fatty acids through cooperation of lipid binding proteins with nuclear receptors. He has acquired managerial skills as co-ordinator and member of national and international joint research projects (e.g. in FP3 to 6), he has been the president national and international societies devoted to basic and applied research. Professor Rudolf Zechner is a highly acknowledged lipid researcher who has contributed to the lipid field with hallmark discoveries. His group focuses on the generating and utilisation of mutant mouse models to elucidate the physiological function of metabolic lipases. He has been the speaker of various joint research projects and is presently coordinating two large national research consortia (Lipotoxicity, Genomics of Lipid-associated Disorders). Professor Zlatko Trajanoski was originally trained as biomedical engineer and gained extensive experience in genomics and bioinformatics. His current research focuses on transcriptional regulation of development and identification of molecular mechanisms by combining computational, molecular and biochemical approaches. Dr. Harald C. Köfeler was trained at the mass spectrometry center of M.L. Gross in St. Louis, MO, where he expanded his knowledge towards HiRes (4 sector, Q-TOF, MALDI-TOF/TOF) and UltraHighRes (FT-MS) MS technologies. He then introduced quantitative methodologies for simultaneous offline determination of lipids with NanoESIMS/ MS in Graz. In 2005 he became director of the mass spectrometry and chromatography

core facility, which is part of the LRC Graz.
ContributionsThe role of this partner will be to analyze signalling events regulating lipid droplet formationwith particular focus on lipid modifying enzymes such as lipases. Graz is the centre for proteomics and lipidomics research for the whole of WP3.
