Sphingolipids are derivatives of long chain bases, as shown for ceramide and sphingosine-1-phosphate, and are composed of a hydrophobic moiety and a hydrophilic head group. They can be divided into two groups: the sphingophospholipids comprising of sphingomyelin, ceramide-1-phosphate, sphingosine-1-phosphate and sphingosylphosphorylcholine, and glycosphingolipids of the lacto-, globo- and ganglioside series.
