Welcome to the Lipidomics Expertise Wiki Portal

A revolution in mass spectrometric lipid analysis is currently taking place, which will dramatically change our understanding of how lipids interact with genes and proteins to determine cellular functions.

The Specific Support Action “European Lipidomics Initiative; Shaping the life sciences” (ELIfe, http://www.lipidomics.net) as well as the Lipidomics Expertise Platform (LEP, http://www.lipidomics-expertise.de), which serves as an information platform for lipidomics expertise, lipid standards and methods aiming to provide a repertoire of lipid related SOPs.

As a future perspective this platform should help to standardize lipidome related nomenclatures and to establish and harmonize lipid metabolic pathways/tools in a worldwide effort together with the NIH initiative LIPID MAPS - USA (http://www.lipidmaps.org) and the RIKEN institute initiative Lipid Bank - Japan (http://www.lipidbank.jp). A major goal will be to move basic lipidomics to applied clinical lipidomics including the discovery of lipid related biomarkers and pathomechanisms. One strategy will be the correlation of quantitative lipid species level with expression analysis data, including mRNA life Imaging and proteomic data. To perform such an analysis Bioinformatic tools are planed to develop in cooperation with the European Bioinformatic Institute in Hinxton. The analytical techniques include Affymetrix and Illumina microarray analysis, Taqman high-throughput expression (especially prespotted Taqman cards) and SNP analysis, DNA sequencing, dHPLC, 8-parameter flow cytometry, fluorescent imaging, metabolomics and lipidomics (ESI-MS/MS and GC-MS of all major lipid species in sterol-, fatty acid-, phospholipid metabolism, lipoprotein subspecies analysis; and lipid arrays for the detection of lipid-specific antibodies).
